Photo Friday – “Hip to Grip”

Photo Friday is a quick blog capturing skiers on the slopes. It’s a journal of present and past photographs captured from resorts across North America.

Situation

Here’s a photograph we took during a race event at a local ski resort. The racer was competing in a Slalom race early March. Skiers are in the Under-12 age category.

Skier 2 is on the same line but seems to have a different edge angle compared to the previous skier. WHY?

Slope

The photo was captured during mid day on Comet slope (Black diamond run)

Snow Conditions

Conditions were groomed firm.

Camera Settings

  • Camera: Canon 5D Mark II
  • Canon Zoom Lens: 70-200mm
  • Focal Length: 200mm
  • ISO: 100
  • Aperture: f/5.6
  • Shutter: 1/1600 sec

PHOTO TIP:

Skiers at the gate seem to be a more dramatic photo. It’s also a point in the turn that the ski edges have increased to the maximum. This makes for an action photo with the snow flying.

If you’re trying to capture ONE photo, I focus at the point where the gate meets the snow and I’m then confident to capture a focused image.

If you want multiple photos, Canon has a setting called Ai Servo which would normally constitute a detailed article. The short version? – It tracks the subject as you pan with the skier…
